The history of ear adornments date back to ancient Minoan and Persian ages, and is widely thought to be the first ever kind of body modification. Throughout centuries, carvings, paintings and written references suggest that gold and silver hoop earrings were worn as early as 2000–1600 BCE.
So, what made our predecessors choose to pierce their ears and forge the way for this fashion trend we all embrace today? Originally they were predominantly worn by men as a symbol of status and wealth. However, as times and indeed fashions moved on, the earring held many different meanings at different periods through history. For example, only slaves wore earrings in ancient Rome, whilst Greek mythology tells us that the decoration was the choice of prostitutes.
